Are you new to Facebook or are you completely confused by all this Facebook stuff? Facebook is a social network website that allows people to sign up for free and begin to "friend" or connect and share information, pictures, video and more with other people.
Once you are a member of Facebook, people can search to find you by name, location, common interests, past schools or by any other information you include on your personal profile.
Advertisements will also pick up on your age and interests. The far right side of the Facebook screen is filled with ads that will more than likely appeal to you because they already know a little about you.
There are many benefits to using Facebook. Most people use it to connect with friends and family. It comes in handy when you want to share photos of Christmas, birthdays or other special occasions with your family and friends. Simply post them on Facebook and these photos will instantly be shared with every "friend" you are linked with on Facebook. Within a very short time, you will have a comment or two from friends who are online and enjoying your latest post.
Another great way to connect on Facebook is with the "chat" feature on the bottom right corner. Simply click on the word "chat" to open the box. When any of your friends appear to be online you can click on their link to open the chat window. Start typing just below the chat box, then hit enter and your conversation has begun. You can block this feature by simply clicking the options link at the top right side of the chat box.
To some, this can sound a little scary and invasive and it certainly has some risks if you are not careful. It is important to set your own security level to protect your profile content, friends list and photos. Once you are logged into your account simply go to your account in the upper right corner. Find privacy and account settings to secure your account.
It might be helpful to read what Facebook has to say about themselves...
Founded in February 2004, Facebook is a social utility (network) that helps people communicate more efficiently with their friends, family and coworkers... Anyone can sign up for Facebook and interact with the people they know in a trusted environment. Facebook is a part of millions of people’s lives all around the world. Facebook is a privately-held company and is headquartered in Palo Alto, Calif.
Facebook's privacy policy is TRUSTe certified, and Facebook provides simple and powerful tools that allow people to control what information they share and with whom they share it. More information can be found at www.facebook.com/privacy/explanation.php. From its beginning, Facebook has worked to provide a safe and trusted environment by, for example, requiring that people use their real names.
Facebook also works with online safety experts around the world and has established a global Safety Advisory Board that it consults with on safety issues. More information can be found at www.facebook.com/fbsafety and www.facebook.com/security.
With over 500 million people on Facebook, this has become a very popular pastime for socializing and playing online games. It has also become a fast and efficient way to promote your organization, event or business. Speak Up Epping! hopes to use Facebook to help spread the latest news and events with all our "friends."
